A Look Back in Time

Crossmichael Flower Show

In appreciation of the support and interest shown in the Flower Show by Exhibitors and Visitors alike, since its reintroduction by the Community Council in the late 1970’s.  “The Writer of these notes” hopes, that a brief history of its Predecessor, The Crossmichael Horticultural Society may be of interest to a few of its supporters.  (Compiled mainly from one of its earliest Show Schedules) with all the information concerning the various items we find there, (All specially selected) give us a good insight into what was in daily use in that period and what the Committee wished to encourage amongst the younger members of the Community, (With the exception of the minister) it is obvious that most of the members of the Committee consisted mainly of local Landowners (Where possible all addresses will be given).

The first show of the “Crossmichael Horticultural Society” was held sometime in the month of August 1885 in the School and continued to be held there Annually until the outbreak of the 1914 – 18 War.  (A period of Approx. 30 years)  Admission to the Show was from 12 noon until 4 p.m.  1/- and from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.  6d.
